Selangor, May 9, 2022 – When Columbia Asia launched its first hospital in 1997, coronary artery disease patients would receive medical therapy. Today, with the advancement of medical sciences, diagnostic tools in cardiac care at Columbia Asia have become more dynamic. The rise of minimally invasive techniques has created waves of change, resulting in shorter hospital stays and recovery periods.

Cardiology across Columbia Asia hospitals

Namely, there are 10 Columbia Asia hospitals with Cardiology units. They are located at the groups’ hospital branches in Bukit Rimau, Cheras, Iskandar Puteri, Klang, Petaling Jaya, Puchong, Seremban, Setapak, Taiping and Tebrau.

These units, except for Puchong, are equipped with catheterization laboratories or commonly referred to as Cath Lab. This special imaging equipment is used to view arteries and blood flow, to and from the heart.  This helps the Cardiac team diagnose and treat blockages in the arteries, among other heart conditions.

Skilled and experienced cardiac team

Going into the specifics, there are a total of 13 interventional cardiologists across the 10 Columbia Asia hospitals comprising 11 resident consultants and two visiting consultants. All 13 cardiologists are equipped with vast experience from both public and private practices.  “Interventional cardiology has evolved rapidly for the past 20 years,” says Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & Internal Medicine Physician from Columbia Asia Hospital – Petaling Jaya, Dr. Richard Chan.

Doctors are also supported by a team who are specifically trained in cardiac care. “Angioplasty has never been a one-man show,” says Dr Chan. “It involves a whole team of personnels in the Cath Lab, consisting of a radiographer, a cardiovascular technician and scrub nurses.”

Non-invasive options for diagnosis

As far as diagnosis options go, Columbia Asia hospitals are equipped with Interventional and Non-interventional Cardiology services. Non-invasive cardiology services focus on the detection and treatment of heart diseases, using external tests — rather than instruments inserted into the body — to evaluate and diagnose cardiac disorders. Interventional cardiology service diagnoses and treats heart conditions using minimally invasive techniques often involving catheters, which are small flexible tubes inserted into the body.

Other cardiology services at Columbia Asia include Cardiac Risk Assessment and Treatment that assesses cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar; Coronary Angiogram, a procedure that uses a dye and X-rays to see how blood flows through heart vessels; Coronary CT, an imaging test that uses X-rays to take detailed pictures of the heart and blood vessels; MR Angiography, a non-invasive and painless diagnostic procedure that focuses on blood vessels; and Coronary Angioplasty which is a removal of blockages and the restoration of blood flow in the arteries using balloons and stent implantations. Other cardiology services include the diagnoses and treatment of heart diseases. Common heart diseases in adults are coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, palpitation and heart failures.

As a core discipline at Columbia Asia hospitals, our facilities are onboard with these advancements and continuously strive to provide our patients with the Columbia Asia brand of healthcare — effective and efficient. For more on Cardiology services at Columbia Asia, log onto www.columbiaasia.com/cardiology.
